There are some people who think that mattresses are simply plunging pads needed mostly for somewhere to lay. Well, there is need to reconsider this. The mattress is the major source of comfort for the body during sleep. As a matter of fact, sleep scientists have revealed that one quarter of an average human’s life is spent in bed. Unfortunately, the mattress (a facilitator of sleep) is left unnoticed and not given the attention that it needs.

By considering mattresses to be just another part of the home furniture, the importance of mattresses had been greatly undermined. A bad mattress is worse than a dilapidated house. It can lead to sleep problems, muscles aches and spinal problems. A stressed head over an equally unhealthy body is usually the end result of using a bad mattress.

Since the mattress serves as a comfort zone on which a good proportion of your life is been spent, it is important to be careful about choosing the right one. Today’s market offers different types of mattresses and what you decide to buy solely depends on your needs and specifications.

While others may be swearing by a spring mattress, some may prefer the foam mattresses. Other popular forms of mattresses include memory-sprung (a combination of memory foam and springs) and airbeds, however, they have their pros and cons. Unlike foam mattresses which are mostly employed for daily usage, airbeds are designed for temporary sleeping. If you have guest over at your place or you are out camping, having an air mattress would certainly make a great choice.

As a common myth among most people, it is believed that softer mattresses perform poorly when compared with the efficiency of hard mattresses. Actually, this is not really true. What really matters is how consistent is the surface of the mattress? You know you are using a good mattress (whether soft or hard) when it doesn’t leave you feeling sore without causing pressure points in your body.

In order to avoid unwanted pressure in any parts of your body as well as your other muscles, the mattress should be in alignment with your spine and should always feel comfortable. If your mattress is not helping you get a good night’s sleep i.e. you are always getting up with a sore back every morning or you are feeling uncomfortable in your old mattress then you can be sure that your mattress needs to be replaced.

Before buying a new replacement for your mattress, ensure to do your research and talk to your partner. It's possible that they have different needs to you so although a firm mattress will be great for you, your partner may suffer. You will need to find a quality mattress that works for both of you.
